Dental implants: why we place Straumann and Dentsply Sirona

Not all implants are equal. The practice has chosen two long-established manufacturers, Straumann and Dentsply Sirona, for their clinical track record, the quality of their surfaces and the lasting availability of their components.

What sets implant systems apart

Implant, abutment and crown (illustration).

An implant is a screw made of titanium, or of a titanium alloy, placed in the bone; once the bone has healed around it (osseointegration), an abutment and a crown are fixed to it. Behind this apparent simplicity, several elements make the difference between systems.

  • The implant surface: its treatment (roughness, chemistry) determines the quality of the bone attachment.
  • The connection: the junction between implant and abutment must be stable and sealed to protect bone and gum.
  • Clinical documentation: published studies, over long periods, with known survival rates.
  • Traceability and continuity: being able to identify every implant placed and to find compatible original components years later.

Straumann

A Swiss company founded in 1954, Straumann is one of the oldest implant manufacturers. Its systems are documented by numerous clinical studies, some with follow-up of ten years and more. Its titanium-zirconium alloy implants (Roxolid) and its SLActive surface are designed for a wide range of situations, including thin bone or early loading.

Dentsply Sirona

Dentsply Sirona brings together long-standing systems such as the Astra Tech Implant System, Ankylos and Xive. The group cites a bibliography of more than two thousand articles published in peer-reviewed journals, and ten years of documented follow-up for the OsseoSpeed surface. Its conical connection and the design of the implant neck aim at the stability of the bone around the upper part of the implant.

Why two manufacturers

Having two reference systems makes it possible to choose, for each situation, the suitable implant design, diameter and connection, without compromise. The choice is made by the surgeon at the planning stage, from three-dimensional imaging and the prosthetic project.

What you receive

  • An implant passport: the brand, reference and batch number of every implant placed, to be kept.
  • Original prosthetic components: abutments and screws from the manufacturer, compatible with your implant for any future work.
  • Follow-up: checks of the gum and bone around the implant at regular visits, because an implant is maintained like a tooth.

What matters at least as much as the brand

The quality of an implant is not everything. Healthy gums, periodontitis treated before placement, good hygiene, stopping smoking, precise planning and a restoration that is easy to clean weigh as much as the choice of manufacturer in the lifespan of an implant. This is the whole we strive to bring together.

At the practice

Implants are placed by Docteur Michaël Arroche and Docteur Victor Hazout, most often with a surgical guide made from three-dimensional imaging and the optical impression. Docteur Hazout’s website implants-parodontie.com covers implant and periodontal surgery in more depth.
